Key Observations (so you can see how the timeline leads into risk)

  • Mandelson was in place as Ambassador before the state visit was formalized/planned; his appointment comes months before. That meant the risk of his past associations wasn’t just theoretical — they were already in position when the decision-makers (Starmer et al.) made other plans.
  • The revelations of email/book correspondences came very close to the start of the visit — a few days before Mandelson’s firing, and days before Trump’s arrival. That compressed the time for Starmer’s team to respond/shape the narrative.
  • Public protest activity (on the Epstein-Trump visuals) was timed to hit just as Trump is arriving (or just prior) — almost guaranteed to amplify visibility.
  • Mandelson’s firing just ahead of the State Visit creates questions: was vetting sufficient at first? Did Starmer miscalculate how much political risk was embedded in Mandelson’s past?
